 FEMA May Reimburse Short-Term Lodging Expenses

FEMA provides financial assistance to make sure those displaced by Hurricane Florence are in safe and secure housing.  This is especially true as colder temperatures move into North Carolina this weekend.  If a person has received FEMA funds, they can use that money to pay for a hotel or motel room.

Many people are staying in a home without heat or outside in a tent or other temporary shelter. If you know someone doing so, encourage them to use their FEMA funds for a hotel room.

If residents do get a hotel room during this cold snap, they should keep their receipts.  This will serve as proof that the FEMA assistance was used as intended. It will also help to show a continued need for housing help.  This may allow the person to receive additional FEMA funds if they are eligible.

Receipts should show survivors’ names, the name of the lodging facility, dates of occupancy and the amount paid.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, North Carolina Senators Thom Tillis and Richard Burr issued the following statement regarding North Carolinians who are applying for federal disaster assistance:
“We’ve recently heard stories of North Carolinians who were denied federal assistance for losses associated with Hurricane Florence. Our offices are now requesting additional information from FEMA and local officials to get a better sense of specifics surrounding these reported cases. While not every North Carolinian who suffered property damage will be eligible for federal assistance, we want to make sure everyone who is eligible for assistance receives it. We encourage any North Carolinian having issues with their application for federal assistance to contact our offices by calling 704-509-9087 (Tillis) or 336-631-5125 (Burr).”
Residents from North Carolina who are initially denied disaster assistance can appeal the decision to FEMA. The offices of Senators Tillis and Burr have been assisting North Carolinians with the FEMA application process, and residents are encouraged to contact their offices if they have any questions or are not receiving timely or satisfactory responses.
Senators Tillis and Burr led the North Carolina Congressional delegation’s successful efforts to secure a significant down payment for the state’s long-term recovery in legislation passed last week. Senators Tillis and Burr will continue to work with Congressional leaders to ensure North Carolina has the long-term resources necessary to rebuild from Hurricane Florence.
For three days only, FEMA will have a Mobile Registration Intake Center will be in Snow Hill, Greene County.
The center will be open Monday through Wednesday October 15 – 17, 2018.
The center offers in-person assistance to homeowners and renters who sustained damage in counties included in the North Carolina federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Florence.

Residents of Greene County Can Soon Apply for Help Buying Food after Hurricane Florence
September 28, 2018 – Governor Roy Cooper announced that residents in Greene County will be able to apply for help buying food through the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or “D-SNAP”, beginning Wednesday.
Eligible households will receive a one-time benefit on a special debit card (called an EBT card) to help buy food. (The exact amount will depend on household size, but a family of one would receive $192, a family of four would receive $640 and larger families would receive more.)
To be eligible, a person must:
 Live in one of 28 counties: Bladen, Beaufort, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Duplin, Greene, Harnett, Hoke, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lee, Lenoir, Moore, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Pitt, Richmond, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland, Wayne and Wilson.
 Have suffered losses/damages related to Hurricane Florence, such as damage to property, loss of income or food loss.
 Have proof of identity and proof of residency (if available).
 Have income and resources below certain levels.
 Not currently be receiving help buying food through the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) program. People receiving FNS can also get extra help buying food, but do not need to fill out a D-SNAP application. They can get more information about how to get the extra help at or by calling Greene County Social Services 252-747-5932.
Greene County residents who want to apply for help buying food related to Hurricane Florence can only do so in person at Greene County’s designated application site:

The site will be accepting applications from Wednesday, October 3 through Thursday October 11, with the exception of Sunday, October 7, when the application site will be closed. Hours for the site are Wednesday, October 3rd – Friday, October 5th 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday, October 6th 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Also Monday, October 8th – Thursday, October 11th 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
While Greene County residents are encouraged to apply at the application site listed above, they can also apply in person in any of the 28 eligible counties. As all application sites are finalized, DHHS will post information on locations and hours of the sites in each county on its People can also dial 2-1-1 for information on application sites in their county.

These individuals are employed by FEMA and will have proper identification stating who they are. Greene Becomes 28th County Eligible for Florence Disaster Assistance


RALEIGH: Governor Roy Cooper’s request for major federal disaster assistance for Greene County has been approved by FEMA to help individuals and communities recover from Hurricane Florence.

With the addition of Greene County, 28 counties have now been approved for federal assistance in recovering from Hurricane Florence: Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Duplin, Greene, Harnett, Hoke, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lee, Lenoir, Moore, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Pitt, Richmond, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland, Wayne and Wilson. Additional counties are currently undergoing damage assessments and may be added.

FEMA has approved all 28 counties for Individual Assistance, which makes possible rental assistance and Transitional Sheltering Assistance in hotels. It also provides Public Assistance, which allows local governments to be reimbursed for emergency protective measures, debris removal and other costs local governments incurred in responding to the storm. Houses of worship that suffered damage are also eligible to apply for aid under the Public Assistance program.

FEMA’s disaster assistance programs are designed to help with grants for basic repairs to make survivors’ homes safe, sanitary and secure and to provide a temporary place to live while survivors develop their recovery plans.

Anyone with a home damaged by Florence in any county is encouraged to begin the FEMA registration process by calling 1-800-621-FEMA to register via telephone or by visiting to register online. People can also apply at disaster recovery centers opening around the state in hard-hit communities.

As of today, more than 98,000 people have registered for disaster assistance and more than $50 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved for individuals and families. This already exceeds the totals for Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Storm survivors can also apply for temporary help buying food through the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). For all counties except Greene, people who want to apply must do so in person from Friday, Sept. 28, through Saturday, Oct. 6, with the exception of Sunday, Sept. 30, when all application sites will be closed. Locations and hours of application sites in each county are available on the DHHS website. People can also dial 2-1-1 for information on application sites in their county.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is working to expand the program to Greene County residents and is awaiting federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Low interest disaster loans from the US Small Business administration are also available to residents in the disaster-declared counties. People who are interested should apply with FEMA. The SBA has opened Business Recovery Centers in Craven, New Hanover, Pitt and Robeson counties.

North Carolinians in these counties can also get temporary jobs working on recovery efforts. To apply for the Hurricane Florence temporary employment program, residents should visit their local NCWorks Career Center, which can be found by visiting

Disaster unemployment assistance is also available for North Carolinians unable to work due to Florence through the NC Department of Commerce’s Division of Employment Security. For more information, people can call 1-866-795-8877 or visit

Mosquito Control

This is an update for mosquito control efforts in Greene County NC:
Greene County Department of Public Health mosquito abatement program will begin spraying and larvaciding for mosquito's this Saturday. We are also passing out information about how to avoid being bitten during this mosquito infestation.  This information is on the Greene County Department of Public Health website too.
The mosquito abatement process will begin in the areas of the county that have been determined to have the highest counts of mosquito's at this time.
Bee Keepers have been or are currently being notified of this spraying effort.
We are beginning this process now since Greene County has been added to the Emergency Disaster Area listing and know we will receive reimbursement through the State of North Carolina and hopefully FEMA for this mosquito abatement effort.

As part of our standard procedure to bring on board general contractors, we have been reaching out to general contractors licensed with the state board of general contractors to notify them of an application availability to become pre-qualified to do repair, reconstruction and rebuilds of homes damaged in Hurricane Matthew.
